Joran van der Sloot in Court.

Joran van der Sloot’s attorney says he has appealed his client’s 28-year sentence for the murder of Peruvian business student Stephany Flores.

Lawyer Jose Jimenez, filed the appeal in Lima, Peru late last week claiming the 28-year sentence handed down on January 13th was too harsh and did not take into account his client’s confession to police while in custody.

Today, Jimenez told reporters that Van der Sloot has never denied killing Stephany Flores and should have enjoyed the benefit of a reduced sentence due to his cooperation throughout the legal process.

Van der Sloot is currently being housed north of Lima in the Piedras Gordas prison, where, according to Jimenez, he is segregated from other inmates.
